Heart-Healthy Workouts

Heart disease is responsible for millions of American deaths every year. Fortunately, it’s considered one of the most preventable. It's all about making healthy choices, both in what you eat and how you treat your body. Your heart is a muscle, so the more active you are, the stronger and healthier your heart becomes. February is Heart Health Month, so  keep your heart healthy with these heart-focused workouts:

Take the scenic route. Whether you prefer walking, jogging, or running, spend some time working on your cardiovascular endurance. Find little ways to work movement into your everyday life, like taking a brief walk after lunch or running an errand on one of your shift breaks. Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator. Walk to lunch instead of hailing a cab. Once you start working more movement into your routine, it'll quickly become habit!

Mix it up. Interval training is a great way to strengthen your heart, improve lung function, and lose weight. It's done by combining short bursts of high-intensity training with longer periods of active recovery. Set your treadmill to a comfortable pace and walk for 3-4 minutes. Then pick up the pace for 1 minute, increasing your speed to a run (if you can). After a minute, dial it back to your normal pace for 3-4 minutes. Repeat for 30-45 minutes for a full interval training workout.
