When I was young, and in particular in my high school years – I had a handful of friends who lost their mother to breast cancer. It was inconceivable to me. How does someone survive that kind of devastation? It broke my heart to see my friends going through such loss.

Those stories are now, thankfully, fewer and far between in my little world.  I am fortunate enough to say that I have several friends and family that have suffered, but survived breast cancer.  When my sister and sister-in-law received their diagnosis, I was scared and couldn’t help to think back to that loss my friends had experienced in our youth. I never lose the fear, even now that they are in remission.

In my families’ case, it was apparent that early detection and our latest medical advances were the answer and played a major factor in their ability to beat their cancer. Both my sister and sister-in-law detected, and treated their cancer early. I think that, and their kick-butt attitude made all the difference. They are both beautiful, active women, and are wonderful mother’s with incredible daughters!

Please, please make your yearly mammogram and doctor’s visit a priority. Regular mammograms can help find breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most successful according to the American Cancer Society. Keep taking care of yourself for you and your family! I am so fortunate to have both my sister and sister-in-law. I love you both!
